If you are looking to attempt something new, then the Mediterranean Diet would be a great one to try.

It is presently considered to be one of the healthiest and safest diets around. In fact, many people do not consider it a diet at all because you can eat as much as you like, but you are eating from a list of healthy food choices.

This diet will focus on eating smart rather than incorporating formulas such as calorie counting or calculating portion size. It is simply based on eating healthy foods and you can tailor the diet to suit your needs.

It is called the “Mediterranean” diet because the majority of the foods that are suggested in the diet are food staples from the people who live in the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The countries that surround this sea would include Spain, Italy, Greece and France.

What do you eat when on the Mediterranean Diet?

Lots of fruits and vegetables

Lots of beans, lentils, nuts and whole grains

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Moderate amount of fish, especially fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon

Some Cheese and yogurt

Limited amount of poultry

Little or no red meat

Little or No sweets and sugary drinks

What are the Health Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet?

-Initially helps with weight loss and then helps to maintain a proper body weight

-Helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels and blood pressure

-Helps support a healthy digestive system

-Helps with disease prevention, lowering risk for some cancers

-Helps maintain a healthy heart reducing events such as heart attack and stroke

When your diet is rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and healthy fats such as olive oil, fish and nuts, the body responds well.

The food choices listed above makes this diet high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidant properties.

So if you want to try something new, why not this diet?

The plus is that the Mediterranean Diet is so popular that you can pull many meal plans and recipes off the internet for free.

So the only thing you have to lose is some weight if you try it.
